Everyone in Congress agrees that a tragedy such as Saturday’s Arizona shooting can’t be allowed to happen again. But they disagree about how to guarantee that. House Speaker John Boehner opposes a gun control bill that New York Republican Rep. Pete King, chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, plans to offer in response to the disaster, The Hill reports
King’s proposal is to forbid people from carrying guns within 1,000 feet of members of Congress. Boehner spokesman Michael Steele says the speaker won’t support King’s legislation.
The office of Majority Leader Eric Cantor says he is withholding judgment until King completes his bill.
“Mr. Cantor believes it’s appropriate to adequately review and actually read legislation before forming an opinion about it,” Cantor spokesman Brad Dayspring wrote in an e-mail to The Hill.
