Bob Bauer, who served as White House counsel during the Obama administration, is playing the role of President Donald Trump during former Vice President Joe Biden’s debate practice, Fox News reports.

A source familiar with Biden’s debate preparation told Fox News that Bauer has stepped in to play the role of the president in mock debates leading up to Tuesday’s first presidential debate in Cleveland, Ohio.

Bauer served as White House counsel for former President Barack Obama, and as general counsel on both his 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns. Bauer’s wife Anita Dunn is a senior adviser on Biden’s campaign.

The source told Fox News that Biden’s goal is to “share his agenda, his plan, and his values."

The source noted that “there is no debate performance that can fundamentally shift the race because of what people are living through,” referring to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Everyone is stuck in a reality on account of Trump’s mismanagement, so there is no outcome during the debate that can really change the trajectory of this race,” the source said. “If Trump has a good debate, which we anticipate, and he has no compunctions about lying through his teeth and making things up on the spot, American life is still defined by his failure to have any plan to beat COVID.”

The Biden campaign is preparing for Trump to “lie through his teeth,” the source said.

A former Biden staffer also told Fox News that people know how Trump “likes to lob insults and bait people by stating things that are not true."

The source told Fox News the campaign isn’t worried about Biden making a gaffe during the debate. The source noted that voters know he is prone to making them and that it is something “only the media cares about.”

“In fact, it makes him more relatable to them,” the source said, adding the campaign “does not see the debate as a very big inflection point in the race.”

“Fox News Sunday” anchor Chris Wallace will moderate the first presidential debate between Trump and Biden, which will take place on Tuesday in Cleveland, Ohio.
