Sen. Bob Corker said on Wednesday that he intends to move forward with legislation limiting some of the president's authority on trade despite a phone call from President Trump urging him not to do so, The Hill reported on Wednesday.

The Tennessee Republican, who is the Senate Foreign Relations chairman, told reporters that he had a "fairly lengthy" and "heartfelt" conversation with Trump on the subject on Wednesday and that the president objected to the legislation, although he refused to say what Trump said to him.

Corker did say, however that the president "feels this takes away his negotiating ability."

Trump is using Section 232 of the trade law, which allows tariffs to be placed on imports in the name of national security, according to The Tennessean.

But Republican congressmen argue the steel and aluminum tariffs Trump wants implemented on the European Union, Canada and Mexico do not meet the qualifications under the national security provisions of the trade law and wants the legislation amended to need congressional approval for the president to take such action.

Corker emphasized to reporters that as a senator he has responsibilities, and that "I don't think there's anybody on our side of the aisle that doesn't understand that the 232 authority is being greatly abused."

Corker acknowledged to CNN that some of his Republican colleagues were "fearful" of crossing the president despite their objections to his tariff policy as harmful to the economy and American jobs.

However, he added that "to me this is the kind of thing that should pass 100 to nothing," The Hill reported.
