Special counsel Robert Mueller should not issue a report on the ongoing investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election too close to the upcoming 2018 midterm elections, Sen. Bob Casey Jr. warned.

The Pennsylvania Democrat, speaking to host John Catsimatidis on his Sunday radio show "The Cats Roundtable" on AM 970 in New York, said he could not make any assumptions about where the investigation is going following the indictments of 13 Russian individuals for conspiracy to influence the American elections in 2016 in an effort to sway the electorate in favor of President Donald Trump.

"I don't think we'll know anywhere near the full story until [Mueller] issues his report," Casey said. "I don't know if that report will be in the spring or the summer. But once you get into the summer, and you get close to the election, I think it's a mistake for him to release it late. I think you should wait until after [the election]."

Casey also commented on Thursday's failed immigration reform vote in the Senate, saying "The border security money is not going to be there, and the Dreamer issue was not resolved yet. I think [it] was a bad day for the country with that bill didn't get through."

He blamed Trump for the vote's failure, saying "I was hoping the president would say nothing — or would wait till the bill got to the House so that he could urge the House to vote for it. But instead of saying nothing, his administration attacked it pretty aggressively. And that made it almost impossible to pass in the Senate.

"It was a tough day because these young people are living with this uncertainty. They're as American as I am. They've lived their whole lives here. The countries they would go back to — they don't even know these countries."
