Blumenauer Runs from His Death-Panel Memo

Friday, 31 December 2010 12:17 PM EST

Several years ago, basketball star Charles Barkley made waves when he claimed he was misquoted in his autobiography. Now Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., is distancing himself from a memo sent by his own office urging health reform advocates to keep quiet about new end-of-life counseling rules, The Hill reports. The idea was to avoid publicity about “death panels” of course.

blumerauer, memo, death, panel“The weeks-old memo recommended that end-of-life advocates celebrate a ‘quiet’ victory out of concern that Republican leaders would ‘use this small provision to perpetuate the death panel myth,’” the news service states.

Now that the letter has boosted conservatives’ point that the Obama administration tried to sneak in the provision without the public knowing, Blumenauer says he regrets the memo's recommendation for secrecy. “If I had seen the memo, I would have suggested it be worded differently,” he tells The Hill.
