The time has come for the legal immigration system of the United States to be thoroughly checked after it was revealed that the Bangladeshi man who allegedly carried out a terrorist attack in New York City on Monday was admitted into the U.S. though chain migration, Rep. Marsha Blackburn told Fox News' "American Newsroom" on Tuesday.

"We have to clean this up," the Tennessee Republican said. "You have to look at the legal immigration policies and the effect that this has - the lottery system, the chain migration, those vulnerabilities that are seeded into the immigration system."

The suspected terrorist, Akayed Ullah, was admitted to the U.S. in 2011 on a family immigrant visa. He was one of 141,501 immigrants who arrived in the U.S. from Bangladesh through chain migration since 2005, according to the White House.

Blackburn stressed that not only is it important to look at the immigration system, but it's also vital to be aware of the associations and affiliations that immigrants may have.

Ullah has been charged with supporting an act of terrorism, making a terroristic threat, and weapon possession, the New York Police Department announced.
