Hacking activities occurring during the 2016 presidential election weren't about politics, but instead centered around "undermining the democratic system in the United States," Washington Free Beacon senior editor Bill Gertz told Fox News' Sean Hannity Friday night, following reports pointing at Russian President Vladimir Putin in connection with the activities.

"Absolutely nothing has been done," Gertz, the author of the new book "iWar: War and Peace in the Information Age," told Hannity about President Barack Obama's response to cyberattacks, reports The Free Beacon.  "We are faced with what I call an information warfare assault. I think this latest report from the intelligence community confirms that."

In his book, Gertz talks about how the the United States can beat China, Russia, Iran, and ISIS in the coming information-technology wars.

Gertz, appearing on Hannity's show with Dr. Sebastian Gorka, discussed the intelligence community's finding that Putin spearheaded the cyberattack efforts against the Democratic National Committee and key operatives such as Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman, John Podesta.

"Well, the conclusion is we are facing an information war and we are being disarmed in this battle, in this war, and we need to develop new methods, new institutions, new capabilities," Gertz told Hannity. "We need clear thinking, we need clear strategy, and we need to counterattack."

Gertz also said Obama's attempted Russia reset did not work, because when the attempts first started, "intelligence agencies and law enforcement agencies were prohibited from saying anything critical about Russia or Putin."

It was pointed out in this week's intelligence report, "this has been going on for more than ten years and nothing has been done about it," Gertz said.
