Dems Worry Over Lack of Counter-Programming During RNC

Some Democrats say former Vice President Joe Biden isn't doing enough to counter the Republican National Convention, The Hill reports.

Several Democrat strategists and fundraisers told The Hill that Biden should be doing additional counter-programming while the GOP convention is taking place, even if he appears virtually.

“Has anyone heard anything from Joe Biden this week?” one Democratic strategist said. “Are we just going to let them say whatever they want and go unanswered? And I don’t mean on Twitter.”

A Democrat fundraiser said the Biden camp has “gone silent.”

“Amazing week last week. But this week? Nothing…I don’t understand why we have to cede some ground to Trump,” the fundraiser told The Hill.

The Biden campaign team has plans to put Sen. Kamala Harris, who is Biden’s running mate, in the spotlight to combat the RNC coverage on Thursday. She is scheduled to give a speech ripping the president’s coronavirus response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Biden campaign said she will also lay out a plan to contain the coronavirus and “build a different path forward.”

The team hasn’t been totally absent this week. The campaign held three virtual fundraisers and an online event in Michigan with Black women on Wednesday.

Biden issued a video statement Wednesday about the officer involved shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

But some say Biden should be stepping up to do more to respond to the RNC.

“They have been very silent and it’s risky,” Julian Zelizer, a professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University told The Hill. “The GOP is working hard to shape a narrative for the fall—and to paint the Democrats as too far left.

He said Biden should “hit back very hard” to ensure he is at the “center of his party” and show the “real radical in the race is Trump.”

“The more he waits, the harder it is to dig out of the spin the GOP will unfold,” he said.

Democrat strategist Brad Bannon said it time for the Biden campaign to “take off the gloves and be more aggressive.”

“The NFL season starts in 15 days and it's time for Biden to get out of his present defense and start blitzing Trump,” Bannon told The Hill. “It’s time for Biden to remind moderate independents that the main course at the GOP convention is just red meat for right wingers.”

A Biden ally told The Hill Biden is using the week to reset.

“I assure you he’s not just taking it easy,” the ally said. “He’s making plans for the long haul.”
