Bernie Sanders' supporters are being asked by his campaign to steer clear of a Donald Trump rally being staged Monday in Wisconsin in a bid to prevent any physical clashes.

"It's a free country with First Amendment rights and certainly Donald Trump has said some things that you can understand people would disagree with, and make a point of disagreeing with him on," Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs told London's Guardian newspaper.

"But from our standpoint, the best way to direct those energies and all that enthusiasm tomorrow night is to come out and root for Bernie."

On Tuesday, Wisconsin holds its all-important primaries on Tuesday with 42 GOP delegates up for grabs and 96 Democratic delegates in play.

Supporters of both Trump and Sanders are holding separate rallies just one block away from each other in downtown Milwaukee.

Last month, violence broke out at a Trump rally in Chicago when the billionaire developer's supporters clashed with protesters who appeared aligned with Sanders, although the Vermont senator's camp denied involvement.
