In the latest indication that Bernie Sanders is closing in on a decision to run again for the White House in 2020, the Vermont senator has secured the services of key digital experts from his surprise performance in his last presidential campaign and is recruiting the media production company that helped propel New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to prominence, Politico reported on Monday.
Means of Production, the filmmaking cooperative that helped make Ocasio-Cortez’s House campaign successful, is in negotiations with Sanders about a significant role in 2020.
In addition, two other digital experts who have helped Sanders build a successful media operation from his Senate office, are also likely to be part of his 2020 team.
These moves, among others, emphasize that if Sanders runs in the Democratic primaries, he will do so with a key head start as he has a digital operation that is currently leaps above virtually any other candidate.
Naomi Burton, who was one of the founders of Means of Production, confirmed to Politico that they have been in talks with Sanders team and if he decides to run, Sanders is “the only candidate we would work for.”
However, some key Sanders alumni have also defected to rising star Beto O’Rourke, with The New York Times reporting that Middle Seat, a digital firm created by former Sanders staffers, is "hoping" to be part of an O’Rourke 2020 campaign.
Such defections illustrate how significantly different a primary race Sanders would face in 2020.
