Democratic strategists say Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are too similar for both to mount runs at the 2020 Democratic nomination for president, The Hill reports.

Two progressives fighting for the Democratic nomination would be one too many.

"If a likely winning strategy is to reconstitute as much of the Obama and Clinton coalitions as possible, it’s unlikely they will be able to do so sharing the same ideological space," Democratic strategist Basil Smikle told The Hill.

"Someone, most likely Senator Warren, would have to move a little to the center to be successful in a primary and general," Smikle told The Hill.

Neither has announced intentions to run in 2020, and Sanders, an Independent who caucuses with Democrats, carries the baggage of a failed run against Hillary Clinton in 2016.

I'm "convinced both are going to run and I don't see one bowing out for the other," Democratic strategist Jim Manley told The Hill. "They're going to have to battle it out over who is going to carry the wing of the party and I can only assume both are eying each other warily."
