Bernie Sanders: Taxes Will Go Back Up If Dems Retake Congress

(CBS's "Face the Nation")

As close as the Republicans are to passing the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act before Christmas, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said Sunday a Democrat takeover in Congress after the 2018 midterms will result in the taxes on corporations and the top tax bracket to go right back up.

"I think we're going to take a very hard look at this entire tax bill and make it a tax bill that works for the middle class and working families – not for the top 1 percent and large multinational corporations," Sanders vowed CBS's "Face the Nation"  once Democrats regain a majority in the House and Senate.

The latest congressional conference committee tax reform package cuts the corporate tax rate to 21 percent, the pass-through businesses to 20 percent, and the top of personal tax brackets to 37 percent.

When pressed by CBS host John Dickson on whether Sen. Sanders would work to bring the corporate tax rate back up from the planned 21 percent after regaining control of Congress, Sanders vowed: "Absolutely."

"Yes," he continued. "In my view, absolutely."

Also Sunday, Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., offered regret he was not more involved in the Republican's tax cuts, considering he is a moderate who presented passable tax reform items Democrats would have been on board with.

"I really believed that the president wanted to work in a bipartisan way," Sen. Manchin told NBC's "Meet the Press.

"This is not a reform. This is a tax cut."
