Sanders to Dems: Fight Trump on Issues, Don't Wait for Mueller

(NBC's "Late Night with Seth Meyers")

In addition to following special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the U.S. election and the Trump campaign's alleged collusion with Moscow, it is even more important for Democrats to provide solutions to ordinary Americans for how to fix the problems they face on a daily basis, Sen. Bernie Sanders said on NBC's "Late Night with Seth Meyers."

When show host Seth Meyers asked the Vermont senator if he worries that those on the left will passively wait for Mueller to clearly expose the Trump campaign's guilt rather than focusing on defeating the president at the ballot box, Sanders agreed that "Americans are not staying up every day worrying about Russia's interference in our election."

The senator insisted that "We've got to work in two ways. No. 1, we have got to take on Trump's attacks against the environment, against women, against Latinos and blacks and people in the gay community, we've got to fight back every day on those issues. But equally important, or more important: We have got to focus on the bread-and-butter issues that mean so much to ordinary Americans."

Sanders continued that Americans are "wondering how they're going to send their kids to college, they're worried about how they're going to be able to pay the rent, they're worrying about whether they can afford healthcare… and those are issues that absolutely we cannot afford to lose sight of."

Sanders, however, did stress that the first indictments handed down on Monday as part of the Russia investigation are a big deal.

"Bob Mueller, who — let us remember, was appointed to be FBI director by [former President] George W. Bush, reappointed by [Barack] Obama, a man who has a whole lot of bipartisan support across the political spectrum — he was given the assignment of determining whether or not the Trump campaign colluded with the Russians to undermine American democracy. And today is a major step forward with the indictment of [Paul] Manafort. And we'll see how the process works out."

Sanders added that he is concerned "very much about the attacks that we're seeing every day in a variety of ways, not only from the Russians on American democracy. We have a president who clearly does not understand the Constitution of the United States. A president who attacks the media every day and the media has a very important role to play in our democracy."
