WaPo: Bernie Sanders Attracts Largest Crowd on Campaign Trail

WaPo: Bernie Sanders Attracts Largest Crowd on Campaign Trail

Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders, the leading alternative to Hillary Clinton, attracted on Sunday in Portland, Oregon, the largest audience since being on the campaign trail, according to The Washington Post.

Sanders took to the stage at the Moda Center sports arena, home to the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers, where the arena filled with 28,000 people, campaign aides said.

While the Portland arena has a capacity of 20,000, aides said that an additional 8,000 people gathered in overflow areas that were designed specifically for the event.

Discussing a better life for the working class, a minimum wage increase, Social Security benefits and free college tuition, Sanders has been drawing the largest crowds of any candidate from either party, the Post reports.

Sanders broke his own record when the total turnout on Sunday far surpassed the 15,000 people who attended in Seattle just 24 hours earlier.

"Whoa. This is an unbelievable turnout," Sanders said after he walked onto the stage, according to a press release.

Sanders also stated that his goal is to "reverse the four-decade decline of the American middle class and launch a grassroots 'political revolution' to take on the billionaire class."

"Bringing people together" is at the core of Sanders campaign, he said, which is evident by the vast crowds that continue to gather.
