Bernie Sanders' campaign manager clarified his comment that the Democratic convention would be "messy," saying that Sanders meant that a heated debate was possible.

On CNN's "New Day," Sanders' campaign manager Jeff Weaver said, "If we can't get the platform planks that the senator supports in the platform during the committee process, if we can't get the electoral reform that the senator is advocating, then of course those things would have to go to the floor for voters during the convention."

Weaver said Sanders' followers know that he was not inciting them to violence, saying, "We're just going to have votes on the floor of the convention. That's all."

The comment by Sanders, "It's going to be messy," came about when Sanders discussed the Democratic Party's platform at the convention.

CBS News reports he said, "I think if they make the right choice and open the doors to working-class people and to young people and create the kind of dynamism that the Democratic Party needs, it's going to be messy."

NBC's Kristen Welker interviewed Sanders on the "Today" show for a follow-up comment. The Democratic presidential candidate said he was taken out of context. "The context of that was that democracy was messy, that people will have vigorous debate on the issues."

Sanders added that "democracy is messy," and "if you want everything to be quiet and orderly and allow, you know, things to proceed without debate, that is not what democracy is about."

Hillary Clinton's campaign spokesman Brian Fallon suggested that Sanders' hopes would be validated, during an interview on CNN's "New Day."

Fallon said he believed the campaign would be "a lot less messy than a lot of people are suggesting," because the Democrats will eventually unite to take on presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.
