Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., met with his top political advisers to discuss a possible run for the White House in 2020, Politico is reporting.

The website attributed the information to six senior Democrats familiar with the weekend gathering.

Politico noted Sanders has not made any decisions, but wants to be ready if he decides to run again.

Sources told Politico a possible 2020 run was not the only issue discussed at the gathering. However, they said the meeting was larger than previous informal gatherings with Sanders and included a preplanned discussion of the 2020 race.

"The senator is extremely focused on making sure the Democrats win in 2018, and that is the primary goal right now: to retake the House and retake the Senate so we can stop this horrendous Trump agenda," said Jeff Weaver, Sanders' campaign manager and top political adviser.

But the website's sources said those at the meeting told Sanders if he wants to run, it is time to start seriously start planning.

Those in the meeting included Weaver, Nina Turner, president of Sanders' post-campaign organization, political adviser Chuck Rocha, pollster Ben Tulchin, and Democratic strategists Mark Longabaugh and Julian Mulvey. Sanders wife, Jane, called in by phone.

A recent CNN poll showed 55 percent of voters favored Sanders, compared to 42 percent who backed President Donald Trump in a possible 2020 showdown.
