The public is “frustrated with being left behind,” fueling Sen. Bernie Sanders’, I-Vt., strong showing in 2016 — and why he’s “the most likely” Democratic nominee in 2020, GOP pollster Frank Luntz said Sunday.

In an interview on Fox News’ “MediaBuzz,” Luntz asserted “capitalism itself has been so demonized by the media, it no longer functions as an economic system. And if you want to oppose socialism, you oppose it by talking about freedom, not capitalism.”

“I’m gonna get chewed out by Rush Limbaugh, but for the wrong reasons,” Luntz said. “It’s not that the principles of capitalism are dead, in fact the principles of economic freedom are alive and well.”

“But capitalism has been so demonized by the media that it just doesn’t function as an economic system.”

Kurtz noted 46 percent of Trump voters support raising the highest tax rate on the top 1% of Americans to 70%.

“The public is really frustrated about being forgotten or left behind,” Luntz said. “Those two notions are not just alive on the right, which elected Donald Trump, but also the left — the reason [Sen.] Bernie Sanders [I-Vt.] did so well, in 2016 and why I … think he is the most likely nominee in 2020.

“I will tell you something: Republicans should want that,” he continued. “Sanders cannot appeal to overall mainstream American. People should be scared to death if they get Colorado Sen. Michael Bennett — there is no issue about socialism there… he is not the extreme. He is in the mainstream.”
