Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., on Wednesday issued a short condemnation of President Donald Trump's recent pardons for dozens of individuals "who flagrantly and repeatedly violated the law and harmed Americans."

Trump this week issued pardons for many of his closest allies, including his longtime associate Roger Stone and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, as well as Charles Kushner, father of Trump's son-in-law, White House adviser Jared Kushner.

"U.S. Senator Ben Sasse released the following statement after President Trump exercised his constitutional power to issue pardons to another tranche of felons like Manafort and Stone who flagrantly and repeatedly violated the law and harmed Americans," reads a post on his Senate webpage.

The statement simply reads: "This is rotten to the core."

Sasse is one of Trump's most vocal critics among Senate Republicans, having previously ripped the president's use of executive orders as "unconstitutional slop," and saying Trump's stance on withdrawing troops from Germany and South Korea was "reckless" and displayed "strategic incompetence."
