If Republicans thought they could tame Sen. Ben Sasse after his trashing of presumptive GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump, they were wrong.

While downplaying his call last week for a third-party candidate because both Trump and Hillary Clinton "stink," the Nebraska firebrand, insists:

"I think it's pretty obvious both from the polling and from my experience at every grocery store and gas station fill-up, which is that people wish they had better choices."

On Saturday, Sasse was spanked at the State Republican Convention in Nebraska by delegates who reprimanded him by a vote of 400-8 for his third-party candidate push and anti-Trump stance.

The Omaha World-Herald reported that delegates also passed a resolution condemning the third-party idea, but also reiterating their support for Trump.

The newspaper said that, in addition, delegates "roundly rejected a counter resolution" seeking to condemn Trump for alleged "degrading'' comments toward women and minorities.

In his address at the convention, Sasse said he expects a rough-and-tumble six months until the November election.

"I think the conversation over the next six months is going to be both of the two major party presidential candidates trying to say, 'The other person is worse than I am. The other person is evil. Let me punch the other person in the face. Nothing could happen in America that would be worse than the other person being elected,'" Sasse said, according to the World-Herald.

"And I think 90 percent of Americans would rather be having a hopeful, optimistic conversation."

The Sasse controversy erupted last Thursday as the lawmaker took to Facebook to call both Trump and Clinton "terrible options."

"With Clinton and Trump, the fix is in. Heads, they win; tails, you lose. Why are we confined to these two terrible options? This is America. If both choices stink, we reject them and go bigger," Sasse wrote in a post called "An Open Letter to Majority America."

"If you are one of those rare souls who genuinely believe Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are honorable people — if they are the role models you want for your kids — then this letter is not for you.

"Instead, this letter is for the majority of Americans who wonder why the nation that put a man on the moon can't find a healthy leader who can take us forward together."

Sasse recommended the nation draft "an honest leader" who will "focus on 70 percent solutions for the next four years? You know . . . an adult?"

A political action committee has since been formed to Sasse for president.

"It is now obvious that choice now lies outside the failed traditional two party framework," Daniel Ledoux, a conservative strategist who co-chairs the new Draft Sasse PAC, told Caffeinated Thoughts, a Christian and conservative news and opinion website.
