Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse, a frequent critic of Donald Trump, believes racism was behind the presumptive Republican nominee's verbal attack on the judge in the Trump University case,
Mediaite reported Monday.
Without mentioning Trump by name, Mediate noted the Republican "was perfectly willing to call Trump's attack racist."
Sasse wrote on Twitter:
The tweet was in obvious reference to Trump criticism of U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel's Mexican heritage.
And Mediaite said Sasse "has made it clear he absolutely cannot bring himself to vote for someone as disturbingly flawed as Trump."
Meanwhile, Politico reports that Sasse, rather than endorsing Trump, is considering backing Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson.
"The Libertarian Party is something I would certainly consider in the long term" but added that he "hadn't really looked closely at it yet,"
Politico quoted him as saying.
Sasse was among the first elected officials to denounce Trump, Politico notes.
"Don't be so sure the two-party political system continues long term," the website quoted him as saying.
