GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson says he has no plans to stop the blunt talk that has riled the press in recent weeks, The Hill reports.

"I want people to see me as an honest person, a person who is actually willing to express what they believe," Carson said. "The way I look at it, if people don’t like that, I’d rather not be in office. I don’t want to be in office under false pretenses, just saying things people want to hear so I can get elected."

Carson tempered some of the things he said early in his campaign that drew media ire, but he is now gaining traction by making such statements and sticking to them, including statements that a Muslim president would have to reject Sharia law and that people should rush gunmen rather than acquiesce to their demands.

Besides, Carson says, "I am not making inflammatory comments." It's the media that are trying to turn them into inflammatory comments, he said.

"We need the media to develop a conscience and start working for the people and stop having their own ideological agenda," Carson said, but quickly added that he didn't mean to imply all members of the media are bad.

"I'm still hopeful that the media will come to their senses ... and step up to the plate with some real integrity," he said. "I haven’t given up on them. If I had, I wouldn’t say anything about them. It’s just like a child that you want to correct. If you don’t say anything, they become unruly."
