Former Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson called on Americans to "come together and work together" and "take time to understand one other" amid the outcry over two fatal shootings of African-American men by police in as many days.

The retired pediatric neurosurgeon said on Twitter:

Carson's tweet came after the deaths of Philando Castile Wednesday at a traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minn., and Alton Sterling outside a convenience store in Baton Rouge, La., the day before.

They were the latest in a string of shootings that have reignited calls to revamp the way police interact with the black community across the United States.

President Barack Obama said that the deaths underscored the need for the nation to address "the appearance or reality of racial bias" in policing.
