Ben Carson once again offered equivocal praise for the man he has endorsed for president when he said in a radio interview on Sunday there probably are better people than Donald Trump to do the job.

"He has some major defects, there’s no question about it — just like the rest of us," Carson said on "The Cats Roundtable" on AM 970 in New York.  "But I think he is willing to listen to other people. He may not say that publicly because there is a humility issue there that could perhaps use some polishing."

Trump has faced a tough week after he said women should be criminally punished if abortion is made illegal — he later backtracked — and that the United States should cut its funding of NATO. He also has come under fire for retweeting an unflattering picture of Ted Cruz's wife, Heidi, and over charges filed against his campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, over an incident in which he is accused of jerking the arm of a female reporter.

But Carson, speaking to host John Catsimatidis, said Trump is the person running who is mostly likely to restore faith in government.

"Nobody believes in the government anymore," Carson said. "Everybody believes that we are weak, we are weak on the world stage, we are not doing things that make sense economically."

Trump is "probably the person who is most likely to do that," Carson said, but added: "Are there better people? Probably."

The establishment in the Republican Party is "scared out of their wits" at the possibility of a Trump presidency, Carson said, because they don't have control over him.

"The established political class, both Republicans and Democrats, have been in control for decades, and I believe the established Republicans would prefer to see someone like Hillary Clinton win than they would Donald Trump, because she’s part of the established political class, is predictable and is controllable," he said.
