Ben Carson, who dropped his own White House bid and is now helping Donald Trump with his, says the presumptive GOP presidential nominee could consider a Democrat as a running mate.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal posted Thursday night, the retired pediatric neurosurgeon said he doesn't want the No. 2 spot.

"I’m not interested in doing that for a number of reasons," he said. "I don’t want to be a distraction. I’m sure you remember how crazy the media was about me, I don’t want to be a distraction, it’s too important a time in our life."

But he added: "We would consider people who are Americans and who put America first," and that Democrats could be in the mix.

Any selection could be tricky, however, the Journal reports.

"He could get to Cleveland and designate someone as his vice president and have the convention lose its mind," Erick Erickson, an anti-Trump conservative activist, tells the Journal.

Trump’s campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, however, tells the Journal he "can’t imagine any scenario where the GOP nominee doesn’t have the opportunity to pick his own vice-presidential candidate."
