Donald Trump's shake-up in his campaign shows that "he has really begun to really focus on the issues," former Republican challenger Ben Carson said Friday.
"Donald Trump himself has been gradually recognizing that he does need to spend a lot more time talking about the issues and less time giving ammunition to those who wish to destroy him," Carson, the retired pediatric neurosurgeon who is now a surrogate, told Kimberly Guilfoyle on Fox News.
Trump's shake-up on Tuesday included installing Breitbart News executive chairman Steve Bannon and chief executive and promoting pollster Kellyanne Conway to campaign manager.
Paul Manafort, who was effectively replaced in the moves, resigned on Friday amid news reports about lobbying activities for Ukraine.
Carson told Guilfoyle that Trump visiting flood-ravaged Baton Rouge, La., on Friday with vice presidential candidate Mike Pence was "actually very revealing for everybody.
"It's absolutely spectacular that Donald Trump was willing to go down there — because you look at those people, thousands of people whose lives have been literally turned upside down.
"They are devastated. It is so comforting for them to know that someone in the hierarchy of this country is willing to come down and see what they are talking about.
"This is something that you are going to see a lot more going forward over these next several weeks," Carson said.
