Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., slammed President Donald Trump's treatment of G-7 allies.

Cardin's comments came in a Monday interview on CNN's "New Day" morning program.

"I think President Trump is the one who's the outsider in the G-7," Cardin said. "The manner in which he has treated our closest allies has been really difficult to understand.

"We need Canada's help and support. We need support of the G-7. These are Democratic countries that share our values and yet the president seems to want to go it alone when it comes to working with our closest allies.

"Everything I've heard on the trade front is that the Canadians, the Mexicans, our European allies . . . all have been extremely disappointed by the way President Trump has brought up the trade issues.

"To say Canada stabbed the president in the back . . . I just think that's a creative criticism. It just doesn't exist."

He stressed the countries have to work together.

Trump "started criticizing our allies when he became president," he said.

Cardin maintained America's allies have made have helped make "America the great nation that it is."

Trump branded Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as "dishonest" and "weak" after the weekend's G-7 summit.
