A former Democratic member of the House thinks President Donald Trump has lied and contradicted himself but does not believe he should be impeached.
Former Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., was on MSNBC Sunday afternoon and was asked about whether his former colleagues should pursue removing Trump from office over the Mueller report — despite the fact that Trump has been cleared of conspiring with the Russians and obstructing justice.
"It is impossible that Donald Trump told the truth because he's contradicted himself so many times. At the best he could have told the truth maybe 60% of the time because there's a great conflict with what he says on one occasion and what he says later with regard to Michael Cohen, with regard to Stormy Daniels, with regard to other things," Frank said.
When it comes to impeachment, Frank said, "I agree that impeachment should not go forward.
"I think the Democrats ought to be talking about the policy failure of the Trump administration, the failure to deliver what he said he was going to be, more fairness in the economic system, but I think impeachment would be a mistake and [it's] important for the country to have an election in which the approach Donald Trump has taken is put to the voters."
Author and economist Ben Stein shared the segment with Frank and said the entire Russia investigation was a "witch hunt and a hoax." He also had high praise for Trump's job performance as president.
"Mr. Trump has been a fantastically successful president, especially the policy of making people better off," Stein said. "We have an incredibly prosperous economy beyond what anyone would have thought. A prediction of a depression and the stock market crash. None of that happened.
"People have a chance, people can go to college. People can go to junior college. Very low unemployment, especially among minority groups. There's been an incredible success and upturn in this economy."
