President Barack Obama told an audience of Hollywood stars Thursday night that Donald Trump will not be his successor.
Obama made the pledge at a Los Angeles fundraiser,
according to a pool report cited by The Hill. Actresses Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Julia Roberts were reportedly at the event.
The Los Angeles Times reports that Obama said neither Trump nor his main Republican rival, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, will win the presidential election in November. He noted there is a "deep obsession" with Trump, a real estate mogul whose rise to top of the GOP presidential race has been polarizing and controversial.
Obama, reports the Times, said Republicans in the race are "laying bare, unvarnished, some of the nonsense we've been dealing with in Congress. It gives you a sense of what's at stake in this election."
Tickets for the event, which took place at the home of Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn, cost $15,000 to $66,800 per couple.
Also present was House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a close ally of Obama. The president, reports the Times, called her his "co-partner in everything we've been able to accomplish."
Obama was in Chicago earlier on Thursday and
spoke about Merrick Garland, his Supreme Court nominee. He later
taped an interview with Fox News before traveling to California.
Obama is due to attend a San Francisco fundraiser Friday night before departing the Golden State on Saturday.
