In a House subcommittee hearing Tuesday, Rep. Ayanna Pressley, a member of the progressive "Squad," vowed to end the Hyde Amendment that prohibits the spending of federal tax dollars on abortion.
The amendment has been included in every federal spending bill since 1976, but Pressley, D-Mass., tweeted, ahead of the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee that was set to debate the amendment's future, saying:
As Chairwoman @rosadelauro said, this is the last year the Hyde amendment will perpetuate harm onto Black and brown people seeking to exercise their right to bodily autonomy. Hyde's days are numbered. #BeBoldEndHyde
Fox News noted that the title of the hearing was: "The Impact on Women Seeking an Abortion but are Denied Because of an Inability to Pay."
Democrats said the the amendment prevents low income women from using Medicare to pay for abortions, thus denying "the humanity of people of color and their ability to do well for their families," according to Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., the incoming chair of the House Appropriations Committee.
Joe Biden, a long-time supporter of the Hyde Amendment, changed direction on the presidential campaign trail, giving Democrats new hope. In June 2019 he said he "can no longer support an amendment that makes" a right to an abortion "dependent on someone's ZIP code."
