Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Friday lauded "100 years of mateship" with the United States, calling America "our most important strategic and economic partner" — and vowing to stand by its side.

In a joint news conference with President Donald Trump, Turnbull said "Americans know as Australians know, that each of us have no better ally."

"We are mates — 100 years of mateship," he said, adding: "Our meeting today was a great opportunity to strengthen and deepen our engagement with the United States — you are our most important strategic and economic partner — and to lay the ground work for a new phase of intensified cooperation, the next 100 years of mateship."

Turnbull also extended his condolences to the families of victims of a mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, on Feb. 14 — and his good wishes to Americans dealing with the issue of gun violence.

"When you grieve … so do we," he said. "So we send our love, our prayers and our condolences to all of the victims and their families of the shocking shooting in the school in Florida. We are mates. We stand by each other. "

"You have an amendment to your Constitution which deals with gun ownership," he later added. "You have a very, very different history. And I will focus on our own political arguments and debates, and wish you wise deliberation in your own."

Trump, meanwhile, praised Australia’s stricter immigration policies, including its "merit-based" system.

"My friends from Congress listening to that? Merit-based," Trump said. "We want to do merit based immigration, also. And we will. That really protects the interests of Australia and its people. It's the way to go. You've been very successful with it here. We're working hard to do the same. In that sense we're going to hopefully follow in your footprints."
