President Donald Trump will nominate Ryan McCarthy, a former Army Ranger, for the position of Army undersecretary, according to The Hill.

McCarthy has been serving as Lockheed Martin's global security policy vice president. He worked as a special assistant for former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, The Hill reported.

Since joining Lockheed in 2011, McCarthy worked on programs that included the F-35 joint strike fighter, which Trump has said was too expensive.

During the invasion of Afghanistan, McCarthy was a member of the 75th Ranger Regiment, according to the Washington Examiner.

An April report in The Hill cited a defense industry consultant, who said McCarthy "has a very good reputation, a hard-charging guy that knows how the building works."

The consultant in the April Hill report said during his work with Gates, McCarthy was the "right hand of the Defense secretary with front-office access."

There is no timetable for the Senate to address McCarthy's nomination. If he is not confirmed before the lawmakers' late-July break, McCarthy would not be able to take the job until September, The Hill's Wednesday report said.
