The Republican candidate to succeed Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer leads his Democratic opponent in a new poll of a contest that observers have judged too close to call,
the Weekly Standard reports.
Republican Doug Ducey leads Democrat Fred DuVal 46-37 percent in a survey this month of 600 likely voters, conducted for the conservative group American Encore by pollster Kellyanne Conway.
Conway called Ducey's lead "commanding but not complete."
With 10 percent of likely voters undecided, and a third-party candidate drawing 5 percent, Conway told the Weekly Standard that immigration, education and the economy are the issues Arizonans still want to hear about most from the candidates.
Poll averages, including those tracked by Real Clear Politics and Talking Points Memo, have the race as either a toss-up or within the margin of error.
Brewer, a highly visible Republican governor who has clashed with the White House over immigration and border control, is not running for a third term.
Ducey and DuVal exchanged harsh words at Sept. 29 debate,
the Associated Press reported, with Ducey calling DuVal a "bag man" for shadowy Democratic campaign donors and DuVal charging that Ducey hasn't come clean about the controversial sale of his ice cream business.
DuVal, also a businessman, recently took campaign money from Sadam Hussein's former Washington lobbyist,
The Daily Caller reported on Friday.
