Several erstwhile Republicans are descending on Philadelphia this weekend for a mini-convention to kick off what they hope can be a politically and financially viable third party, Politico reported.

Their motivation for breaking from the party — President Donald Trump. Their model — Alaska Gov. Bill Walker, who left the GOP and won as an independent in 2014 with a Democrat as lieutenant governor.

"Those that are running as independent have to work a little harder," Walker told Politico. We have to be a little bit more creative and figure out how to get it done."

So the Republicans — along with a handful of Democrats — will gather this weekend and learn the machinations of running campaigns for governor and the U.S. Senate in 2018, Politico reported.

Two former Republican operatives — Matthew Dowd and Reed Galen — will advise the group.

Their benefactor — the Centrist Project, which has raised $750,000 to seed the fledgling group, according to Politico.

"They're committed to running as independents for the reasons of disrupting and changing the political system, not because they're on the fringe," Joel Searby, the senior strategist for the Centrist Project, told Politico. "When they start to see that there is not only a viable plan — a business plan, a fundraising plan, but also a serious network of people — that's when you can see the light bulbs go off."
