President Donald Trump's call out of Democrats voting for lawmakers who do not support Israel has angered Jewish Democratic Council of America Chairman Ron Klein, who calls it "weaponizing anti-Semitism."
Klein, too, politicized the Jewish vote as he accused the president of doing, ostensibly dismissing anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) Movement Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., as political nonfactors compared to the president.
"Weaponizing anti-Semitism means that he's using it as a tool to drive wedges in this country, drive hate and violence," ex-Rep. Klein, D-Fla., told CNN's "New Day." "I'm personally sick and tired of the president using language which incites violence."
Klein was referring to President Trump's rebuke of Jewish voters who vote for Democrats like Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., who support the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) Movement. But the president's language did not mention violence and any inference to incite it in the president's remarks Tuesday are difficult to discern.
"Any Jewish people that vote for a Democrat — I think it shows either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty," Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday.
Klein, who said the JDCA was formed to combat President Trump's rhetoric after Charlottesville, Virginia, said BDS supporters Omar and Tlaib are political non-factors.
"This is President Trump's game of trying to confuse people, win some votes on one hand or the other here," Klein said. "Ultimately at the end of the day, he's responsible for his own words. And he's the president.
"A couple members of Congress who are saying things, they don't have any major political influence. He does. He has to set the leadership."
Klein then proceeded to politicize the Jewish vote himself.
"The reason Jews vote for Democrats, three-quarters of them, in this country in part is because, yes, the Democratic Party supports Israel and, equally important, the Democratic Party supports immigration reform – these are values that the Jewish community has," Klein said. "Fights against anti-Semitism, of course, the issue of common-sense gun reform, healthcare, education, environment – these are the reasons Jews vote Democrat and President Trump is on the wrong size of every one of those issues."
