Mitt Romney's wife, Ann, is supportive of him running for the U.S. Senate seat in Utah that will be open with the retirement of Sen. Orrin Hatch, The Boston Globe reported.

Four friends of the Romneys told the Boston Globe that Ann's support is a strong sign Romney will run.

"It's easy to say she would be very supportive. To say the least," one friend told the Globe.

"She's on board. Ann is supportive, and she thinks Mitt would be a fabulous senator," a second friend added.

The friends told the newspaper Ann supports her husband's possible candidacy because the Romneys are concerned about President Donald Trump's style of politics.

The failing health of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is also a concern, one of the friends told the Globe. "With Ann, it's somewhat because of McCain's problems and the feeling that Mitt would be someone who would add a lot to the mix in D.C."

The report said those close to Romney see McCain as a model for the type of senator Romney would be — willing to take issue with Trump, but also willing to seek common ground.

Part of the delay in a possible Romney announcement is an unrelated issue in the Mormon church in the wake of the death of Thomas S. Monson, the Mormon prophet and church president. Romney does not want to offend Mormons who are in mourning, the report said.

Those close to Romney say he has a sense that he should take the opportunity to run. "He really feels like there are a lot of things that he can do to help the country as well as Utah," a source told the newspaper.
