Angus King: Trump Team Trying to 'Delegitimize Any Opposition'

MSNBC's "Morning Joe"

By    |   Monday, 13 February 2017 12:20 PM

President Donald Trump and members of his administration are trying to belittle anyone who criticizes their actions, according to independent Sen. Angus King Monday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"The thing that really bothers me … what you're seeing appears to be a somewhat systematic effort to delegitimize any opposition," King said.

The Maine senator discussed Trump adviser Stephen Miller saying Sunday that the president's authority "will not be questioned."

"Those statements yesterday were absolutely breathtaking," King commented.

While the president does have power to affect foreign policy, the U.S. Constitution provides limits to that power, he said.

"Miller and Trump, I don't think, have a gut-level understanding of checks and balances, of the Constitution," King said.

He noted the president's tweets about the judge who ruled against his travel ban, in which Trump called him a "so-called judge."

"That guy wasn't a so-called judge. He's a judge. He's a federal judge," the Maine senator noted.

At another point during the segment, "Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough also mentioned Trump's criticism of the courts, saying that if the president defies a court order, he might be impeached.
