Rep. Devin Nunes' memo on the Russia probe should not have been released, but since it has, it compromised the relationship between the FBI and the House Intelligence Committee, Sen. Angus King said Tuesday.

"Here's the problem that I don't think has gotten enough publicity," the Maine independent told MSNBC's "Morning Joe." "These [Senate and House Intelligence] committees are the only watchdogs on the intelligence community. A lot of what they do is secret ... what worries me is that the FBI will be reluctant to share information, or the CIA."

The agencies can decide they don't trust Capitol Hill and won't release information, he said, but for example, on the Russia document, the committees have had "unprecedented access to documents in the CIA and the NSA. They could have stonewalled us, they could have made it much more difficult, with subpoenas and all that stuff. That depends on trust and the Nunes memo breached that trust, in my view."

King also discussed the ongoing issues concerning fake news stories being posted on social media sites such as Facebook, and said owners like CEO Mark Zuckerberg need to take on the issue head on, as indicators are showing Russia may also interfere in the 2018 elections.

"Is the technology there to identify the source, so people can be alerted to the fact that they're being conned?" said King. "I can tell you as a person, I'm running for office in 2018, it used to be you're worried about skeletons in your closet coming out, now they can make it up. They can write a story that has no relevance to anything and by the time you can rebut it, it's already gone viral."

King said he does not want the government to censor social media sites, as he thinks Zuckerberg created an "amazing platform."
