Sen. Angus King: Dems Never Had Chance to Make Tax Bill Bipartisan

Democrats never had a chance to work with Republicans on a tax reform bill, Sen. Angus King told CNN on Tuesday.

"It didn't have to be the Republican bill. It could've easily been a bipartisan bill," said King, a Maine independent who caucuses with the Democrats. "There were at least 15 or 20 Democrats that were anxious to do tax reform, cut corporate rates, deal with off-shore profits, all of those issues, and there was never a chance."

King said the bill was clearly fast-tracked through Congress on partisan lines. He added that the process was "ridiculously rushed" and there was no time to go through all the details of the legislation.

"If you have a bill that's really important, the process by which you get there should be very thorough," he insisted. "And instead we had the most important bill and the worst process. That's just not any way to run a railroad or the United States Congress."

The Maine senator earlier told CBS' "Face The Nation" that there were zero hearings on the bill and contrasted it to the 1986 tax bill, which had 33 hearings and took 10 months.

He also pointed out that as opposed to this bill, which "was dragged across the finish line on a party line vote," the vote in the Senate for the 1986 legislation was 90-10.

Regarding the current legislation, Republicans in the Senate and House have now entered the conference phase of the tax plan to work out discrepancies between the two bills, The Washington Times reported.

They intend to meet their target date of Christmas to pass the bill and send it to President Donald Trump's desk.
