Rep. Andy Biggs to Newsmax TV: Romney 'Only Asterisk'

When Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, claimed he had a "conscience" in being the only Republican to vote for impeachment of President Donald Trump, he ostensibly rejected everyone else among the Senate GOP.

And, Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., told Newsmax TV, Romney effectively damaged the rest of his "time and tenure" as a Republican senator.

"I think that's really disruptive to the party, but you know what, in the end, in doesn't matter: President Trump was acquitted," Biggs told Wednesday's "Newsmax Now."

"The only asterisk on this whole thing will be Mitt Romney's time and tenure in the Senate."

While he voted with all Republicans in the 53-47 acquittal on obstruction of Congress, Romney voted "guilty" on abuse of power, (52-28 to acquit).

"There's no excuse for what he did today," Biggs told host John Bachman. "I know he said it's a vote on conscience – I don't want to minimize that, I get that – but the reality is what happened here is the culmination of 3 1/2 years of hassle, harassment, investigation of this president and then-candidate Trump.

"To basically turn your back on the context of why we're here and say you want to overturn that election because you have a conscience, and basically take the sanctimonious position that no one else has a conscience that's voting for acquittal" was a disingenuous move, Biggs said.

Biggs also had harsh words for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., ripping up the State of the Union address on international TV.

"That's probably the most juvenile maneuver you would ever see, impetuosity on her part," Biggs said, adding it was "classless," "graceless," and "demeaning to the office."

"It shows the direction that we're going," he added. "Hers was a pessimistic, temper tantrum, cynical view of America, reflected in her ripping up the speech."
