New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo slammed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for suggesting state and local governments should declare bankruptcy.
In an interview Wednesday with his brother CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, Gov. Cuomo accused McConnell of politicizing the financial situation state governments are facing because of the outbreak.
“It’s one of the dumbest statements of all time,” Gov. Cuomo said.
He questioned how a state declaring bankruptcy would help the national economy get back on track, something McConnell and Republicans are pushing for.
“He then says this is a bailout to the blue states, which was a really offensive statement,” the governor continued.
Cuomo said the coronavirus doesn’t play party politics.
“The coronavirus attacks Republicans and it attacks Democrats,” he said.
He said McConnell is doing the opposite of getting past “partisanship and pettiness.”
“It’s so politically repugnant," he said. “How am I supposed to reopen if you want me to declare bankruptcy? It makes no sense on any level.”
The governor also placed blame on Democrat lawmakers for not pushing to include financial aid for local and state governments in the forthcoming relief package.
“They should have insisted state funding be in this bill,” he said.
