Allen Officially Seeks Va. Senate Seat He Lost in 2006

Monday, 24 January 2011 04:10 PM EST

Former Republican U.S. Sen. George Allen made it official today when he announced in a video on his website that he is running to regain the seat he lost to Democrat James Webb in 2006. Allen called for reducing spending, repealing Obamacare, a balanced budget amendment, and a line-item veto.

All that the country has been getting from Washington of late is “overspending, finger pointing and government mandates,” he said.

“You know me as someone willing to fight for the people of Virginia and I’d like the responsibility to fight for you again,” he said. “Hire me on for six years and I pledge to work hard to restoring freedom, personal responsibility and opportunity for all.”

Allen was on an upward trajectory in 2006, having served as Virginia governor and in the Senate and was being touted as a presidential nominee when his career was derailed with an alleged racial epithet at a campaign event. Allen directed the word, “macaca” a word for monkey, at an Indian-American.

Before getting to Webb, who has not yet announced his intentions, Allen will have to deal with challengers in his own party. Jamie Radtke, chairwoman of the Virginia Tea Party Patriots Federation, is seeking the GOP nomination, and three others have expressed interest.
