Rep. Alan Grayson's Girlfriend May Run For His Old Seat

By    |   Tuesday, 05 May 2015 11:52 AM

As Alan Grayson nears a decision on launching a campaign to fill the Senate seat left open after Marco Rubio announced his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination, his girlfriend is considering running to fill his House seat, reports Politico.

According to sources close to Grayson, Dena Minning, who describes herself on her Twitter profile as a "biotechnology entrepreneur, physician (MD) and scientist (PhD)" and "passionate about improving the world in which we live," has been in contact with one Democratic-leaning organization about running in Florida's Ninth Congressional District.

Appearing on Fox News Radio's "The Alan Colmes Show" on Friday, Grayson said he has not decided, but said he would make an announcement "in the next thirty days."

When Colmes suggested he had reached a decision already, Grayson responded, "if I knew for sure, I guess I would tell you, right?"

The outspoken congressman has never shied from a fight and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) may have picked one with Grayson when it announced its endorsement of Patrick Murphy in the Senate race.

"Patrick Murphy is one of our party's most promising rising stars, and his track record of fighting for Florida's working families, seniors, and the environment make him the strongest candidate to win the Florida Senate race and flip this seat," said DSCC Chairman and Sen. Jon Tester in a statement issued on Monday.

In response to the DSCC's endorsement, the 57-year old Democrat told the Tampa Bay Times that he was "probably going to run for the Senate" and that the voters, "not out-of-touch party bosses sipping cognac in a smoke-filled room in Washington, D.C.," will decide the outcome of the race.

Grayson's 25-year marriage to Lolita Grayson was officially ended just last month when a judge granted a petition of annulment, according to The Orlando Sentinel.

The annulment was the conclusion to bitter fight to end the marriage, which began on Jan. 6, 2014, when the former Mrs. Grayson filed for divorce.

Grayson had argued that their marriage was invalid because Lolita Grayson had not obtained a divorce from her first husband when they got married in 1990.

Because the marriage was annulled, the congressman, who is worth an estimated $31 million, was not required to pay spousal support, Fox 13 News reported.
