Alan Dershowitz to Newsmax TV: I'm Prepared for Trial 'Right Now'

Finally taking his nose out of dusty constitutional law books, legal expert Alan Dershowitz told Newsmax TV he is now ready to present his case against impeachment of President Donald Trump, but he expects Democrats to push him to Saturday.

"I've spent a lot of time with old dusty books, and I've prepared quite an original argument based on history and base on prior precedents on why these two articles of impeachment are unconstitutional and cannot stand as a matter of law," Dershowitz told "Newsmax Now" on Wednesday.

Rejecting Democrats' opening arguments as mere "policy" disagreements and not a true constitutional case for impeachment on abuse of power or obstruction of Congress, Dershowitz expects to make his Senate statement on behalf of Trump's legal team either Saturday or Monday, he told host John Bachman.

"After the other side finishes, they have Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday," Dershowitz said of when he will stand to deliver his constitutional argument against impeachment before the Senate and U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts, who is presiding over the trial. "So, I'll probably go on Saturday or Monday.

"I'm prepared to go right now."

Dershowitz has said publicly he is serving for the Trump legal team pro bono, but any money he would receive would be donated to charity.

Also, he has given glimpses of his arguments, saying abuse of power is too vague – it was rejected by the Founding Fathers – and the president has executive privilege, which would squash any obstruction of Congress, since the third branch of government – the courts – are the referees in any disagreements between the president and Congress.
