Alabama's attorney general, Luther Strange, may be the Alabama governor's choice to replace Sen. Jeff Sessions if Sessions gets confirmed as U.S. attorney general, Republican operatives told Politico

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley has not officially chosen Strange, however, and he could change his mind, the operatives said.

The former basketball player, nicknamed "Big Luther," is planning to travel to Washington, D.C. this week, and one operative said he is interviewing potential staff members.

Strange is "a great pick . . . He's a real conservative, but he isn't scared to go against his own party," one source told Politico.

He has already said he would run for Sessions' Senate seat if Sessions gets approved as attorney general. First, Bentley would have to appoint someone to fill the vacancy until a special election, according to sources.

"We're not going to comment until the governor makes his announcement one way or the other," Strange's campaign manager, Michael Joffrion, said in Politico's report.

One of the operatives said Bentley appointing Strange to Washington could be a way for Bentley to install an attorney general less willing to prosecute him — Bentley is under an impeachment investigation by the state legislature and has been caught in a sex scandal with one of his aides, according to a June 2016 article in GQ

"If he gets the job, it looks like he cut a deal. And if he doesn't, it looks like he's prosecuting Bentley out of revenge," the source told Politico.

Not everyone is in favor of Luther to fill the spot. Alabama's state auditor, Jim Zeigler, said Thursday that he hopes Strange does not get the job.

"Pray for anybody but Luther Strange," Zeigler said, according to AL.com. "If you think Bentley has been bad the last two years, just wait to see the next two years with him having his own attorney general."
