Alabama Republican Party Chairwoman Terry Lathan said the state's Senate race has ended, The Hill has reported.

Although Lathan said the GOP is "deeply disappointed" that Democrat Doug Jones defeated Republican candidate Roy Moore, "we respect the voting process given to us by our Founding Fathers.

"Now that this race has ended, may this holiday season of peace, love and hope resonate with everyone, regardless of one's political affiliation."

Moore has so far refused to concede the elections, saying that "when the vote is this close, it is not over."

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Jones received 49.9 percent of the vote, compared to Moore's 48.4 percent.

The margin was not close enough to trigger an Alabama state law which requires an automatic recount when election results are within 0.5 percentage points.

Lathan stressed that Jones talked during the campaign about reaching across the aisle to work with Republicans and insisted that "we will hold him accountable for his votes," according to AL.com

She warned that "if Mr. Jones aligns himself with the liberal Democrats in Washington, Alabama voters will remember his choices in the 2020 U.S. Senate election."
