Top House Intelligence Committee Democrat Adam Schiff on Tuesday ripped Republicans for closing the panel Russia meddling probe, saying "this is no way to run an investigation."

"It's only a way to go through the motions to give the pretense of trying to find the truth," Schiff, who was first elected from California in 2000, told reporters at the Capitol.

"That was a terrible disservice to the country and the American people and represented a reneging on the commitment that was made at the outset of the investigation to follow the facts wherever they lead."

Republican Rep. Mike Conaway of Texas said Monday that the committee had finished interviewing witnesses and would share is report with Democrats on Tuesday.

Conaway is leading the House probe, one of several investigations on Russian meddling in the 2016 elections.

Schiff was surrounded by the other eight Intel panel Democrats, announcing they would soon release their own 22-page report updating the status of their investigation.

"What the majority on the Intelligence Committee did was go through the motions of an investigation," Schiff said, "call in witnesses but allow them to refuse to answer questions.

"Allow them to invoke non-existent privileges or simply decline to answer questions because the witness didn't deem the question relevant or because they would rather not say.

"We are going to do our best to continue to find the truth," Schiff said. "There are individuals who want to cooperate with our committee and share information and will continue to do so.

"The work is too important to leave undone," he added. "The American people need to know whether the Russians still have something they can hold over the president's head.

"So, our work is far from done."

Rep. Jackie Speier, also of California, said the GOP report ending the probe was "cooked before it was ever baked.

"It's a truly desperate attempt by the majority to undermine what is a very important function."
