House Intelligence Committee Vice Chairman Adam Schiff said Wednesday that his panel did not know about a Russian Internet company identified in reports as obtaining an extension from Facebook to collect data on unknowing users after moving to apparently stop such breaches.

"No. We were not," the California Democrat responded when CNN's Wolf Blitzer asked whether his committee was aware of the company, identified as the Mail.Ru Group. "It's certainly something that we need to look into."

CNN reported Tuesday that Facebook disclosed that apps developed by the Mail.Ru Group were included in a wider investigation into misuse of Facebook user data following the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

According to CNN, the Mail.Ru Group developed hundreds of Facebook apps, some of which were test apps that were not made public.

Two apps were granted an extension, lasting two weeks, the cable network reported, allowing them to collect data beyond the cut-off date.

"We have learned a lot in the last few weeks about Cambridge Analytica, the ties to the Russians and the ties to those in Brexit," Schiff told Blitzer, "the connections between the Brexiteers, Steve Bannon, and the Trump campaign.

"There are a lot of parallels there, but this new potential for Russian gathering of American data was not brought to our attention, no."
