Kinzinger: Green Berets' Job 'Is To Go Into a Place Unsupported'

("New Day")

The Green Berets who were killed in Niger did not have support from fighter jets or tanks because, as Green Berets, their job is to function without support, according to Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill.

"What people need to understand, Special Forces, specifically Green Berets, the reason they are so good at what they do, and the reason they have so much training at something, is because their job is to go into a place unsupported and help native troops of that country be a strong partner in terms of fighting al-Qaida, or they have done this in South America in terms of fighting drug lords and everything else," Kinzinger said Thursday on CNN's "New Day."

"They are specifically used in tough areas unsupported to do this good work." said Kinzinger, an Air Force veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. "While we do need answers, that is 100 percent sure, we need to quickly understand, though, this is their job to do very difficult things."

As to what occurred in the incident in which four soldiers were killed, Kinzinger said the military was "being smart" in pursuing all the information before providing a report.

The congressman also discussed the troops killed in Niger during an Oct. 20 appearance on Fox News' "The Story With Martha McCallum."

"We've gotten into this habit lately of basically speaking to our militaries if they're victims, as if they're victims of, you know, decisions by the lawmakers. These are fierce warriors. They make tough decisions every day to defend the country," Kinzinger said.
