Sen. Kennedy: Trump Entitled to Seek Probe Into Spying Claims

By    |   Thursday, 24 May 2018 01:45 PM

President Donald Trump is entitled to ask for an investigation into whether someone was asking questions, as an informant, into his campaign, Sen. John Kennedy said Thursday.

"The president has asked for an investigation into the allegations, that is apparently now a fact that someone from Justice or the FBI, on behalf of Justice and the FBI, was asking questions as an informant in his campaign, and the president is entitled to ask for an investigation," the Louisiana Republican told Fox News "America's Newsroom."

"I'm entitled to ask for an investigation and you are. People ask the FBI to investigate all the time. It is up to the FBI to decide what to investigate. But in this case I think the FBI, through the inspector general, was going to look into it. "

The American people are also entitled to know, said Kennedy, and he said he is also "just interested in the facts."

Kennedy said he was also not asked to be in the meeting, and he thinks if there are too many people there it would be counterproductive. Also, he said he doesn't think the matter should politicized.

"I think we ought to just get the facts," said Kennedy. "If they had an informant or a spy or whatever people want to call it, I would like to know. I agree with the president. We need some transparency here."

However, Kennedy said he does think Democrats should be allowed to participate, as had they been excluded, "everybody would have been talking about the fact that they were excluded as opposed to talking about what is important, which is the facts that we learn from this meeting. So I'm glad they've been included."

Kennedy also discussed the bipartisan anti-corruption legislation he and Sen. Joe Manchin, D-WV, are co-sponsoring, the JACK Act, which he said will require additional disclosure by lobbyists.

"You have the right to petition your government, even if you are a paid lobbyist," said Kennedy. "This bill is not going to change western civilization, I realize that. It's not going to help people grow hair or cure erectile dysfunction but it gonna fill a need."

Kennedy said he was surprised to learn if a person has been convicted as a lobbyist of fraud, of extortion, of bribing a congressman or senator, that person does not have to disclose it on his or her lobbyist registration.

"I talked to senator Manchin and said let's try to put together a bipartisan bill to do something about it," he said. "That's all this bill does, if you want to be a paid lobbyist you have to disclose if you've ever tried to bribe a congressman."
