Texas Democrats are looking to boost voter registration ahead of the November election, NBC News reports.

They have a goal of connecting with 1 million of the estimated 5 million unregistered, but eligible, voters in the state.

To do so, they launched a registration blitz on Monday, which kicks off Texas Voter Registration Week.

“Voter registration is important to us and a huge part of our path to victory,” Luke Warford, Texas Democratic Party director of voter expansion, told NBC News.

Warford said the focus is on Latinos, other people of color and young people.

Texas saw 1 million people vote in the Democrat runoff that took place last month. The turnout was a historic high for a Democratic Party runoff election, according to NBC News. The turnout rate of 5.8% for the runoff was double the 2018 turnout rate.

During the primary, more Democrat voters cast ballots than Republicans. GOP members hold the major statewide elected offices in Texas.

Voter turnout could be a determining factor in which way Texas goes come Nov. 3. According to NBC News, Texas is considered a swing state. Jimmy Carter was the last Democrat presidential candidate to win Texas.

Democrats are also trying to flip several U.S. House seats that are held by Republicans. To control the state House, they will need to gain nine legislative seats.

One way to register more voters is to go after the state’s growing Latino population. NBC News reports that by 2021, Hispanics could make up a majority of the state’s population. Republicans have been able to secure more than a third of votes cast by Latinos in some races.

To register more voters, Texas Democrats are relying on volunteers to send text messages and make phone calls. Texas doesn’t permit voters to register to vote online. People looking to register to vote must print out a form, sign it and mail it in.

Texas Democrats will provide a stamped return envelope for those without resources to mail the application in.

Warford said the party has signed up 1,500 people in two days. Their new blitz campaign is being conducted with the Joe Biden campaign and the campaign of MJ Hegar, who is challenging GOP Sen. John Cornyn.
